Sporting a bold orange/golden hue, the Domaine de Kerveguen Carpe Diem Prestige pours with a substantial suds, a small layer of which rests atop the golden liquid for the duration. This artisan cider from Brittany reveals its nature first in the nose, which delivers up sweet aromas of pure apple, hints of yeastiness and a touch of Brettanomyces. The sparkle in this French cider is ever-present upon sipping. Despite its deep color (it looks more like a medium-strong beer than a cider) you don’t feel a heaviness on the palate. However, you will notice a well – developed balance of acid and sugar, with just enough tannin to mark the Carpe Diem as an excellent choice to pair with food. Sweet apple flavors are dominant all the way through, from front to back. The barest note of citrus accompanies a certain cellar funk on palate, due again to the brett that is noticeable in the cider. Despite its sweetness and very low alcohol level (3.5%) this drink would never be mistaken for mass market. Pure craft cider here.
