The 2012 Cidre Dry from Kevin Zielinski‘s EZ Orchards outside Salem Oregon continues this cidery’s streak of making beautifully-rendered examples of the apple transformed. This new vintage, with its deep, rich golden color sports fresh and pure apple aromas, earthy notes lying underneath the apple and a caramel whiff. Though dry, this cider is medium to richly structured, hitting the palate with smooth tannins and the slightest line of crisp acidity. The alcohol is nearly nonexistent. The flavors here are an interesting my mix of ripe apple, woodiness, a slight saltiness morphs into a mineral note all ending very long and consistent. This is some of the best cider made in the United States. It deserves to be consumed near or just under room temperature so that the totality of its complexity can emerge. We also recommend serving the cider alongside a fairly substantial food partner. As we noted in our review of the 2011 version of this cider, this cider is underpriced. For $15.99 you can have one of the greatest ciders made in the United States. This kind of pricing can’t shouldn’t last long as Kevin Zelinsky’s ciders draw a wider audience.
