Portland Cider Company’s “Sorta Sweet” pours a lovely and common dark straw with only slight evidence of carbonation. The nose announces this cider’s sweet profile with ripe green apple aromas that come off as creamy. Underneath there are more straightforward apple notes, but they are cooked or backed in character. The high sugar level in this cider provides the body and impression of weight on the palate. The slight note of effervescence is welcome as a foil to the sugar that coats the palate. Flavors? Superripe green apple overrides everything here. This would be a perfect cider to give to folks who believe “cider” is made by big beer companies. It will taste familiar to them, but come with somewhat more refinement. Chill well before serving.
