Sonoma Cider’s “The Anvil” apple cider is a bourbon flavored drink. It is not infused with bourbon, nor does it deliver a higher alcohol. It is flavored in some way. Richly straw-colored upon pouring and with a nice fizz, The Anvil has an interesting (and dominating) aroma of chocolate brownie/cake mix. Get through that and you start to swim in a bit of apple aromas. But it is that cake mix/burn sugar aroma that is predominant. The palate is medium bodied, with the cider carried forward by the effervescence, moderate acid and hints of bitter tannin. There is, as would be expected, a slightly richer character to this cider than Sonoma Cider’s “The Hatchet”, a straight, unflavored apple cider. The flavors combine baked apple, notes of burn sugar, and a welcome herbaceous hint. This well-made cider is going to appeal to many. The addition of bourbon flavoring, though it comes off as cake mix, is somewhat flashy and interesting to contemplate. But this element dominates the drink.
