Bright straw in color and richly carbonated, the 2012 Afton Field has a wine-like appearance and settles down quickly in the glass. The nose on this cider opens with a sweet earthiness that is very compelling. Fresh apple aromas follow along, then sweet floral notes and a noticeable hint of vanilla. Very nice! Equally impressive in the balance here. The tannin and acid are integrated with an impressive richness that layers the palate. If the this balanced character is indicative of unfined and unfiltered ciders, then such an approach is highly recommended. On the palate an equally complex mix of apple, funk, bright lime, and mineral flavors come together to produce beautiful layers of flavors. The finish is medium long and delivers a refreshing final note.
