The Mitten comes into the glass with a light amber hue, little or no sparkle and with perfect clarity. The nose on The Mitten is somewhat reticent. However, on top the sweet, ripe apple is impossible to miss. There is a sweet richness to this aromatic element. Next to the apple is honey or maybe it’s vanilla from the bourbon barrel it was aged in. In fact, there is a “meadish” character to the aromas of The Mitten that is both intriguing and odd. It’s a medium bodied cider that is something of a showcase for excellent balance of acidity and tannin that we like very much. It is sweet however with a dose of sparkle. On the palate you come back to the apple. In fact the sweet, ripe apple flavors that dominate this cider are absolutely linear….they begin as a sweet rendition of ripe apple and don’t deviate throughout the trip. The meadish character found in the nose isn’t duplicated in the flavors. The finish is long in this one. The Mitton is a very good celebration of the apple from start to finish. The barrel aging this cider went through does not result in a dominating element and that’s good. This cider really needs no domination from oak or char.
